A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Mobile, Alabama, on October 21, 2025, when 20-year-old Amiayia White was fatally shot at Wilmer Hall, a transitional housing facility that has been serving the community since 1864. The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m., leaving residents and staff in shock.

Wilmer Hall provides housing and support programs for young mothers and children facing homelessness or unsafe living conditions. At the time of her death, Amiayia was pregnant and living there with her infant child.
According to authorities, 21-year-old David Terrell Smith, Amiayia’s child’s father, has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with her death. Police say Smith allegedly forced his way through a locked door, tracked Amiayia down, and shot her with a handgun.
Investigators believe the incident was domestic in nature, though the exact motive remains unclear. Prosecutors elevated the charges to capital murder based on several factors:
The murder was committed during a burglary.
The murder was carried out intentionally in the presence of a child under 14 years old.
Amiayia was pregnant, which legally constitutes the deaths of two or more people.
It has not yet been determined whether the death penalty will be pursued in this case.
