Break in the Sage Smith Case: Person of Interest Found in Los Angeles

Transgender woman Dashad “Sage” Smith disappeared from Charlottesville, Virginia, on November 20 2012. She was last seen around 6:30 p.m. in the 500 block of West Main Street, reportedly meeting up with someone she knew. Before leaving, Sage told her roommate she was meeting with an unidentified male.
During the investigation, police identified Erik McFadden as the individual Sage was supposed to meet. According to law enforcement, McFadden is the last known person to have seen Sage alive. Shortly after her disappearance, McFadden contacted detectives and agreed to participate in an interview—believed to be calling from New York City—but he never showed. His family reported him missing in 2019.
Major Break in the Case
After 13 years, detectives recently located McFadden in Los Angeles, where he was reportedly in the process of attempting to change his name. Investigators traveled to California and conducted a voluntary, hour-long interview with him. Police have confirmed they have tracked McFadden’s movements across multiple states over the years but have not shared those specific locations with the public.
At this time, McFadden has not been arrested and has not been publicly named a suspect.

Police Request Public Assistance
Charlottesville Police are urging the public to come forward with any information about McFadden’s whereabouts or interactions with him—whether through work, personal relationships, or other contact. Anonymous tips are welcome.
Case Status
In 2016, Sage’s disappearance was officially reclassified as a homicide investigation. Despite extensive searches—including landfill operations—Sage remains missing.
